Another important part of the economy was the
wine production; Quinta Splendida still possesses some old wine presses and
distillery equipment from that time. Our grounds were served by a levada which
still exists today, and continues to serve Caniço de Baixo plantations. The manor
house built in the 18th century, the exact date is not know. It is said to have
been the property of the Jesuits.
Above the doors bishop's hats were painted,
and one side of the house - still visible today - was decorated with a star,
hence the old name of the property "Quinta Estrela".The owners surrounded it
with a beautiful botanical garden. In 1988 the property - then in disrepair -
was bought by a swiss manager and carefully renovated according to the old
designs.
