Information about Madeira island

Madeira Golf at Palheiro
Madeira has long been a favoured destination of distinguished travellers. In 1801 the Conde de Carvalhal built a country house and started the estate known as "Quinta do Palheiro". He introduced seeds and exotic plants from different parts of the world. The Quinta was acquired by the Blandy family in 1885 and successive generations continued to replant and develop the garden. Golf architect Cabell Robinson was employed to design a dramatically interesting golf course incorporating the characteristic Madeiran hills, ridges and deep valleys, which would reflect the elegance and serenity of the surroundings.

Set in the foothills 500 metres above the Funchal bay, the Madeira golf course enjoys superb views of the capital, the ocean, and the surrounding mountains. The sights and sounds of nature are in abundance, with mature woodlands, rare and precious specimen trees, shrubs and lush vegetation. When combined with the terrain, the opulence of flora and fauna at Palheiro is an experience itself.
Palheiro Golf offers services and facilities par excellence; our resident English golf professional and his assistants can offer you lessons and coaching at our extensive practice facilities. The par 71 course is a continuous 18 holes measuring 6015 metres, and, due to the many varied tee positions, offers attainable bogey or par golf for the casual player whilst remaining a stern challenge for the low handicapper. There are five par 3 holes, four par 5s, the longest being 538 metres. The last two par 4s are the most testing on the course and the finish is a fitting par 5.

Golf at Santo da Serra
Situated at 670 metres (1800 feet) above sea level - 27 holes, 9 holes BLUE called "Desertas" for its view over the desert islands, and 9 holes RED called "Machico" likewise for its view over Machico valley, also the point of St. Lorenz (Ponta de São LourenVo), the furthest east point of the island.

With its commanding views of the southern part of the island and over the Atlantic Ocean, it is already considered as one of the world's most beautiful and spectacular golf courses not only because of its unique layout, challenging both low and high handicap players alike, but for its breathtaking landscapes and all-around panoramic views.

The course is a par 72 and about 6000 metres in any combination. Also ideally suited for the organisation of major golf events as the "Madeira Island Open", which will be from the 18th till the 21st of June 1998.
