Levada Walks on Madeira
A Levada walk is along the irrigating channels which cover the whole island of Madeira comprising an impressive 2150 km (1350 miles) of channels, including 40 km (25 miles) of tunnels.

Some levadas are easy to follow; others can be a real challenge. No matter which one you walk, you will get in contact with breathtaking scenery.

Rabaçal's levadas: Rabaçal - Risco - 25 Fontes
Grade 2 - walking time 4 hours
Rabaçal is an enchanted fairyland of singing waterfalls, a favourite excursion spot for the islanders. Here at the head of Madeira's greatest valley, the Rabaçal house lies dwarfed beneath emerald mountains. Three levadas draw their water here; each has its own 'personality', and this walk lets you make friends with all three.

Levada do Caldeirão Verde: Queimadas - Caldeirão Verde - Queimadas
Grade 2 - walking time 4.5 hours
The levada builders have been here first, but you still get the feeling of being the first person in one of the most remote parts of Madeira. Starting at Queimadas and walking through the emerald green rain forest into Caldeirão Verde. A wonderful walk.

Levada do Portela: Ribeiro Frio - Portela
Grade 1 - walking time 3.5 hours
This walk we highly recommend! Spectacular majestic mountains, beautiful tranquil green valleys with close up bird life. A great challenge for photographers, this is one of our favourites. A perfect walk for beginners.

Levada do Caniçal: Marocos - the Caniçal tunnel
Grade 2 - walking time 4 hours
This levada walk offers a level 2 grade that is enjoyable for most tourists of average fitness. The tranquility and peace on the Ribeira da Noia, the beautiful valleys with their 40 shades of green. A very special walk not to be missed.

Mountain Walks on Madeira

Walk No. 1: Boca da Corrida - Encumeada
Grade 3 - walking time 5 hours
This one no serious walker should miss. If we had to choose one mountain walk this would be it. Magnificent views and very little climbing. Spectacular viewpoint overlooking Curral das Freiras and the enchanting green valley of Ribeiro do Poco. A real beauty.

Walk No. 2: Pico do Arieiro - Pico Ruivo - Achada do Teixeira
Grade 4 - walking time 4 hours
Well, this is a great one! Start early as the mists dissipate with the morning sun. Spectacular mountain views. See Madeira from its highest peak and look down from the top of the world. Something special for serious walkers.

Walk No. 3: The Caniçal tunnel - Boca do Risco - Larano
Grade 2 - walking time 3.5 hours
The north coast between Boca do Risco and Porto da Cruz has a rugged beauty unmatched on Madeira and during the walk you will see wonderful contrasts of wild flowers and plants in every colour you can imagine. Across the sea to the northeast Porto Santo is clearly visible. A beautiful walk.

Walk No. 4: Ponta de São Lourenço
Grade 2 - walking time 4 hours
Baía d'Abra - Casa e Cais do Sardinha - Baía d'Abra. The colours of the sea and rocks are dazzling. Bring your sun glasses. Interesting rock formations and flora. Wonderful views of the Atlantic crashing against the coast and the offshore rocks and on the other coast have a swim in the clear turquoise-blue sea.
